Square Foot Gardening Onions

Square foot gardening onions is a great idea since they enjoy rich, loose soil to achieve the best size. Since your square foot garden should be set up to avoid foot traffic near your onions they will not be subjected to compact soil and you can insure that there is plenty of compost and organic matter in your garden bed at all times.

Spacing Onions

When planting onions in a square foot garden you can easily plant 9 onions in each square foot for big classic onions or at a more concentrated 16 per square foot if you plan to harvest green onions and forgo the large bulbs.

When to Plant Onions

Onions are a cool season crop that can be planted early in the season. In fact, as soon as garden soil can be worked it is acceptable to plant onions.
